How to make a Roblox game
From an empty Studio to a published game, in plain steps. You don't need to know how to code, and most of what you need is free.
The steps
- 1Install Roblox StudioIt's Roblox's free editor, for Windows and Mac. Sign in with your Roblox account.
- 2Pick what players doOne thing, explained in a sentence. The game idea generator gives you ideas to start from.
- 3Start on a mapA finished map means your first weeks go into the game itself. Open it with File, then Open from File. See how to open a .rbxl.
- 4Add the scriptsCopy free scripts for the common parts, and ask the script generator for what's particular to your game.
- 5Test it with peoplePress F5 to try it alone. To run several players at once, pick Server & Clients in the test menu and press Play. You can invite up to 10 friends to preview it before anyone else can play.
- 6Publish and release itChoose File, then Publish. It stays private until you release it, and releasing it takes an age check. Here's how publishing works now.
- 7Earn from itSell passes and developer products. You keep 70% of the Robux spent in your game: the tax calculator and the DevEx calculator work out the rest.

Questions
Is it free to make a Roblox game?
Yes. Roblox Studio is free, and so is releasing a game to players 16 and over. Reaching younger players takes Roblox Plus or Premium, or a refundable fee of 1,000 Robux. You can build everything yourself or start from free assets, and only pay for what you decide to buy.
Do I need to know how to code?
Not to start. Free scripts and a script generator cover the common parts, and you pick up Luau, Roblox's language, as you change them.
How long does it take to make a Roblox game?
A first playable version can take a weekend if you start on a ready-made map. Most of the work comes after: watching people play and fixing what they don't enjoy.
Can I make a Roblox game on a phone?
Not really. Roblox Studio runs on Windows and Mac, so you need a computer to build one, though people will play it on phones.
How do Roblox games make money?
Mostly passes and developer products, which players buy with Robux. You keep 70% of the Robux spent in your game, and can cash out through DevEx once you have 30,000 Earned Robux.
