How to make a Roblox racing game
A racing game stands or falls on how the car feels in a corner. Get one car and one short track right before adding anything else. A VehicleSeat tells you when the player steers or accelerates, so most of your time goes into tuning.
What it needs
Players pick a car, race around a track against the clock or each other, and spend what they win on faster cars.
- A car that feels good. Tune speed and turning until a corner is fun on its own.
- A track with real corners. A good corner matters more than a long straight.
- Laps that can't be skipped. Checkpoints in order, so no one cuts across the grass.
- A clock. A best time gives people a reason to go again, even alone.
1Start on a map
Tracks and roads with real corners. The track is most of the game. A finished map means your first weeks go into the game itself. Open it in Roblox Studio with File, then Open from File. Here's how, and there are free maps too.

2Add the scripts
These are free to copy and paste, each with where it goes:
- Roblox obby checkpoint scriptRespawn at the last one after a crash. The lap counter below uses the same idea.
- Roblox leaderboard scriptWins or best times beside each name.
- Roblox speed pad scriptA boost strip on the track.
- Roblox game pass scriptA special car, as a pass.
For what's particular to your game, ask the script generator. Press one of these to start from it:
- A simple car using a VehicleSeat that a player can sit in and drive, with a speed set at the top of the script
- A lap counter with checkpoints that must be touched in order, and a win when a player finishes 3 laps
- A race start with a 3 second countdown that holds players at the line, then shows their time
3Make it feel right
- Build one short track and drive it fifty times. Fix the corners that annoy you.
- Add boost pads and shortcuts only after the plain race is fun.
- Try the controls on a phone. Steering with a thumb is harder, so turning should be a bit forgiving.
What goes wrong most often
- Ten cars that all feel the same. One that feels great is better.
- No way back on the track. A reset button stops people quitting after a crash.
4Test it and publish
- Press F5 to try it alone. To run several players at once, pick Server & Clients in the test menu and press Play. Then invite up to 10 friends to preview it, without any help from you.
- Got a model or a script from somewhere else? Run it through the free backdoor scanner first. Hidden code can take over your game.
- Choose File, then Publish. You'll need an icon and a thumbnail. It stays private until you release it, and releasing it takes an age check: here's how publishing works now.
5Earn from it
You keep 70% of the Robux players spend in your game. Start with one game pass or developer product. The tax calculator works out what to charge, and the DevEx calculator what it's worth in dollars.
Questions
Do I need to script a car from scratch?
No. A VehicleSeat tells you when the player steers or accelerates, and a short script turns that into wheel speed. The script generator can write it, and there are ready-made car kits to start from.
Can I make it work with just one player?
Yes. A best time and a ghost of their last lap give people something to beat when nobody else is on.
How do racing games make money?
New cars and looks, as passes or products. You keep 70% of the Robux spent in your game.
