How to make a Roblox hangout game
A hangout game is a place to be with friends, so it's the atmosphere that counts: somewhere that looks good, with things to do while you talk. There's little to win, so what brings people back is the place and who's there.
What it needs
Players meet up with friends, chat, show off their looks, and play small games around a place that's nice to be in.
- A place worth being. Good light, a view, cosy corners. People should want a screenshot.
- Places to sit and talk. Seats in small groups, not rows.
- Small things to do. A dance floor, a mini game, a swing.
- A way to show off. Outfits, trails and houses, since that's half the fun.
1Start on a map
Hubs, lounges and good-looking places. People come to be somewhere nice, so the place is the game. A finished map means your first weeks go into the game itself. Open it in Roblox Studio with File, then Open from File. Here's how, and there are free maps too.

2Add the scripts
These are free to copy and paste, each with where it goes:
- Roblox background music scriptMusic sets the mood right away.
- Roblox day and night cycle scriptA sunset that makes people stop and look.
- Roblox door scriptRooms that groups of friends can go off to.
- Roblox VIP door scriptA VIP room, for those who buy a pass.
For what's particular to your game, ask the script generator. Press one of these to start from it:
3Make it feel right
- Spend your time on lighting. In Lighting, try
ShadowSoftness, an Atmosphere and a warmClockTimenear sunset. - Make spawn the best view in the game: it's the screenshot people will share.
- Keep servers small enough for people to find each other: around 20 feels busy but friendly.
What goes wrong most often
- Nothing to do but stand around. Even a hangout needs a few things to touch.
- Too many parts: friends on old phones can't stay if it won't run.
4Test it and publish
- Press F5 to try it alone. To run several players at once, pick Server & Clients in the test menu and press Play. Then invite up to 10 friends to preview it, without any help from you.
- Got a model or a script from somewhere else? Run it through the free backdoor scanner first. Hidden code can take over your game.
- Choose File, then Publish. You'll need an icon and a thumbnail. It stays private until you release it, and releasing it takes an age check: here's how publishing works now.
5Earn from it
You keep 70% of the Robux players spend in your game. Start with one game pass or developer product. The tax calculator works out what to charge, and the DevEx calculator what it's worth in dollars.
Questions
What brings people back to a hangout?
Their friends, mostly. Anything that makes it easy to come together helps, like a place that looks good in a screenshot and things to do as a group.
Can a hangout game make money?
Yes, mostly from looks: trails, outfits, emotes and houses. People pay to stand out in front of their friends. You keep 70% of the Robux spent in your game.
Does it need a big map?
No. One place that looks great beats a big one that looks empty. A smaller map also runs better on phones.
