How to make a Roblox obby

An obby is the easiest kind of Roblox game to start: parts to jump across, things that kill you, and checkpoints so nobody loses their progress. What keeps people playing is a difficulty that climbs at a fair pace.

What it needs

Players jump through stages, fall, respawn at their last checkpoint, and try again until they reach the end.

  • Checkpoints. One every stage. Losing ten minutes of progress is why people leave.
  • Kill bricks. Lava, spikes, a floor that kills. They're what makes a jump matter.
  • A fair climb. Ten easy stages before anything hard. Nobody quits on stage 3 for it being too easy.
  • Something to show for it. A stage number beside their name, a trail or a badge at the end.
Roblox obby ideas to start from

1Start on a map

An obby is its own map, but a finished world around the stages looks far better than parts floating in the sky. A finished map means your first weeks go into the game itself. Open it in Roblox Studio with File, then Open from File. Here's how, and there are free maps too.

2Add the scripts

These are free to copy and paste, each with where it goes:

For what's particular to your game, ask the script generator. Press one of these to start from it:

3Make it feel right

  • Make each stage take under a minute. Short stages feel like progress.
  • Test every jump on a phone. Touch controls are harder, and many of your players will be on one.
  • Show the next stage from the one before it, so players can see what's coming.

What goes wrong most often

  • A hard jump early on, with nothing to come back for.
  • Parts that aren't Anchored. They fall the moment the game starts.

4Test it and publish

  • Press F5 to try it alone. To run several players at once, pick Server & Clients in the test menu and press Play. Then invite up to 10 friends to preview it, without any help from you.
  • Got a model or a script from somewhere else? Run it through the free backdoor scanner first. Hidden code can take over your game.
  • Choose File, then Publish. You'll need an icon and a thumbnail. It stays private until you release it, and releasing it takes an age check: here's how publishing works now.

5Earn from it

You keep 70% of the Robux players spend in your game. Start with one game pass or developer product. The tax calculator works out what to charge, and the DevEx calculator what it's worth in dollars.

Questions

How many stages should an obby have?

Start with 20 to 30 that you've played through yourself, then add more when people finish them. A shorter obby that's fun beats 100 stages of the same jump.

Do I need a map for an obby?

Not to start: an obby is its own map. A finished world behind and around the stages makes it look far better than parts floating in the sky, though.

How do obbies make money?

Mostly passes and products: skip a stage, a speed boost, a trail. You keep 70% of the Robux spent in your game.
