How to make a game like Grow a Garden on Roblox
Grow a Garden showed how far one simple idea can go: plant a seed, wait, sell the crop, buy a better seed. There's almost nothing to learn, and there's a reason to come back tomorrow, because the plants keep growing after you leave. Here's how to build your own take on it.
Why it works
Players plant seeds on their own plot, wait for them to grow, sell the crop and buy better seeds.
- Waiting is the game. Crops grow while players are away, so there's always a reason to come back and check.
- The shop keeps changing. Seed stock rotates and some items only come around once, so today's visit matters.
- It's understood in a minute. A new player can plant, harvest and sell before they've read anything.
1Start on a map
A plot of land for each player and a shop they all walk past. Gardens and quiet villages work well. A finished map means your first weeks go into the game itself. Open it in Roblox Studio with File, then Open from File. Here's how, and there are free maps too.

2Build it in this order
Each step is something you can play. Stop when it's fun, and let people try it before you build the next one.
- 1Plots. Give each player their own plot when they join, and clear it when they leave.
- 2Seeds that grow. A seed goes in the ground and a plant grows over time. Save the time it was planted, not a countdown: then it's still growing when they've left the game.
- 3Harvest and sell. Picking a crop earns money, and better seeds earn more. Now the loop works, so play it for a while before adding anything.
- 4Saving. The plot, the plants and the money all have to be there tomorrow. Do this early: it's far harder to add once the game has grown around it.
- 5A shop that changes. Stock that refreshes on a timer, the same for everyone in the server, gives people something to wait for together.
- 6Pets and events. Only once people are coming back. These are what keep them, not what brings them.
3Get the scripts
These are free to copy and paste, each with where it goes:
- Roblox save data scriptKeep their money and plants for next time.
- Roblox shop GUI scriptThe seed shop. Swap the tools for your own seeds.
- Roblox daily reward scriptAnother reason to come back tomorrow.
- Roblox pet follow scriptA pet that follows them around the garden.

4Make it yours
- Change what grows. The same loop works for a mushroom cave, a fish pond or a robot factory.
- Pick one thing Grow a Garden doesn't have and build around it, like seasons that change what can grow.
- Make your own plants and names. Players should be able to tell your game apart from a thumbnail.
Don't copy it
Grow a Garden's name, art, music and code belong to its makers, and copying them can get your game taken down. Leaked copies and free kits are also a common place to hide backdoors, so check anything you pick up with the free backdoor scanner.
5Earn from it
Players pay to skip waiting. Grow a Garden sells speed-ups and perks for Robux, and its pets come from loot boxes. A pass for more plot space, or a product that finishes a plant right now, is a good place to start. If you sell random items for Robux, Roblox requires you to show the odds.
The free game pass and developer product scripts get you started, and the tax calculator works out what to charge.
6Test it and publish
Try it with friends before anyone else. Then it's File, then Publish, and an age check to release it: here's how publishing works now. For the basics of this kind of game, read how to make a Roblox simulator.
Once it's out, show it on Forja so people can find it and play it.
Questions
Can I copy Grow a Garden?
Make your own game in the same style, not a copy. Nobody owns a kind of game, generally, but Grow a Garden's name, art, music and code belong to its makers, and they can have a copy taken down. Your own names and art are safer, and they give players a reason to pick yours.
Is there a free Grow a Garden kit?
Be careful with free kits and leaked copies. They're a common place to hide backdoors, which can give a stranger control of your game. Run anything like that through Forja's free backdoor scanner before you open it, or build from free scripts you can read.
How long does a game like this take to make?
A plot that plants, grows and sells can work in a weekend on a ready-made map. Saving and a shop take longer, and most of the work after that is adding plants and watching what people do.
