The short answer
.rbxl is a whole place: you open it. .rbxm is a model: you insert it into a place. The ones ending in x (.rbxlx and .rbxmx) are the same files saved as text instead of Roblox's compact format.

Which one do you need?
Free assets to try it on
Free downloads from Forja creators.
Turning one into the other
To make a .rbxm from a place, select the objects in the Explorer, right-click and choose Save to File. To make a place from models, insert them into a new place and choose File, then Save to File As.
On Forja
Every listing shows its file type at a glance, next to its size and what's inside (parts, scripts, meshes). A .zip holds .rbxl or .rbxm files: unzip it first.
Questions
Can I open a .rbxm like a .rbxl?
No. Open any place first (a new Baseplate works), then insert the .rbxm into it.
Why is the .rbxlx bigger?
Text takes more room than Roblox's compact format, so the same place is bigger as a .rbxlx.
Which file types does Forja sell?
Mostly .rbxl and .rbxm files, some in a .zip with setup notes, and some .lua scripts.
